State Battling Wildfires

(Bismarck, ND) — One death and one serious injury are being reported from the wildfires hitting western and central North Dakota. Officials have identified six different wildfires ranging in size from roughly 500 to 25-thousand acres. Three fires are reported 100-percent contained and a fourth is 90-percent contained. The two largest fires — the Elkhorn Fire near Grassy Butte and the Bear Den Fire near Mandaree — were still listed as zero-percent contained as of Sunday afternoon. North Dakota Forest Service Fire Manager Ryan Melin said he’s “fought fires across the nation” and he’s “never seen anything like this.” Governor Doug Burgum is expected to visit fire-damaged areas today.
