State Crime Lab Decreasing Rape Kit Backlog

(Bismarck, ND) — The state crime lab is finally catching up with its backlog of rape kits, thanks in part to new technology. Instead of the 300 rape kits waiting to be tested, the lab now has fewer than 80. Technicians say keeping up remains a challenge, since more than 30 rape kits a month still come into the lab. The decrease in wait times is due in part to a new software that tracks the kits from the time they are collected by law enforcement at a medical center and sent to the crime lab for testing. The new software also allows victims to log in and see where their kits are in the system.
