(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa State Fair that opens Thursday offers a critical test for Republican presidential candidates not named Donald Trump. Polling shows the former president holding a big lead over all the other candidates for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. A recent New York Times/Siena College poll showed Trump with 44-percent support in Iowa. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was a distant second at 20-percent and all the others at less than ten-percent. But Trump’s support in Iowa has declined, suggesting another candidate could come away the winner in next January’s Iowa caucuses, the first nomination competition of the year.
