(Minneapolis, MN) — A police officer and two others are dead after a mass shooting in Minneapolis. The suspected gunman was also killed in the shooting that happened Thursday evening at an apartment complex. At a press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey identified the officer who was killed as 28-year-old Jamal Mitchell.
City officials say a total of six people were shot including two police officers and four civilians. According to CBS Minnesota the second police officer was critically wounded. The gunfire began when officers responded to a shots fired call at the complex. Officials says the two officers were ambushed.
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar says she is devastated after the deadly shooting in Minneapolis. Elected leaders and other officials took to social media to offer prayers and support following yesterday’s shooting in the Whittier neighborhood.
Senator Tina Smith said the shooting was tragic and said she was praying for emergency responders and everyone in the community. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan said the state will continue to provide any support possible to the community following the shooting.
