(St. Paul, MN) — The threat of wildfires has increased across Minnesota, leading state agencies to call in seasonal firefighters six weeks earlier than usual. The latest fire danger map from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources shows most of the state in the “high” fire danger category. More than 70 wildfires have been reported around the state in the past few weeks. The DNR has activated its part-time force of seasonal firefighters six weeks earlier than usual to help respond to future wildfires. The agency is also urging Minnesotans to follow all local fire restrictions to help reduce the ongoing risk.
