(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be using wireless emergency alert technology to notify drivers about winter road closures. The system issues the same alerts that are commonly sent during national emergencies or Amber Alerts. Alerts will be sent to every wireless phone in a one-mile radius of the highway affected and to drivers who are ten miles away from a closure location. Alerts will only be sent if a closure is expected to last more than four hours, and only within a designated geographic area.
