(Kingsbury County, SD) — Bald eagles are thriving at Lake Thompson. Population numbers in the area have soared to new heights for a bird once on the brink of extinction because of hunting and pollution. Dozens of bald eagles have come to rest and nest at Lake Thompson, with many coming back year after year to the same nest. Hunting and Fishing Guide Ryan Sauter says spotting one used to be a rare site in South Dakota, but now he’s seeing 50-plus a day. The spectacle is becoming a popular state attraction.
