Battle For Recreational Marijuana Heating Up

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakotans could be looking at another opportunity to legalize recreational marijuana in the state. The group, South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws, has submitted petitions this week with over 29-thousand signatures in support of the ballot initiative for this year’s election. However, their attempt narrowly failed in the 2022 election. And before that, 54 percent of South Dakotans did vote in favor of recreational marijuana. But Governor Noem led the charge to declare the amendment unconstitutional, which the state’s Supreme Court upheld. South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws Matthew Schweich believes more voters are going to participate in this year’s November election, and that will finally push the change over the hump. Jim Kinyon, the chairman of Protecting South Dakota Kids, a nonprofit group opposing a legal cannabis amendment, says he’s doing everything he can to keep it from happening.
