(Pierre, SD) — State lawmakers are pressing forward on what’s to come for the future of carbon dioxide pipelines in South Dakota. Several bills have been circulated this session to address landowner concerns and legal issues over proposed projects. But Senate Majority Leader Casey Crabtree says the bill he is sponsoring, Senate Bill 201, is a strong compromise, and it’s now advancing to the Senate. The bill would require pipeline companies to pay counties a surcharge of a dollar for every foot of pipe, for as long as the company receives tax credits. However, it will also overrule actions counties and other sub-state governments have taken so far in requiring unique setbacks and restrictions on carbon pipelines.
