Bill Introduced To Authorize New Men’s Prison

(Pierre, SD) — The decision to move forward on South Dakota’s proposed new men’s prison in Lincoln County could come as soon as next week. House Bill 10-25 authorizing the construction of the facility was introduced yesterday. This was done at the request of the South Dakota Department of Corrections. DOC and state officials have said the current prison in Sioux Falls is no longer sustainable, forcing a dire need for a new prison. However, Lincoln County commissioners and residents continue to express their opposition to the location between Harrisburg and Canton. The Legislature will need to give the final approval in the upcoming session, which gets underway Tuesday.
