Bill To Expand Free Lunch Falls One Vote Short In Committee

(Sioux Falls, SD) — The expanded free school lunch bill that will help South Dakota’s public schools fell one vote short in the House Education Committee. The vote of 8-to-7 happened Monday. The bipartisan bill was proposed by Representative Kadyn Wittman and in her testimony she said she believes the government should responsible for meeting student’s basic needs which includes food. Lawmaker Tim Reisch disagreed with her and said there are bigger problems to address when it comes to youth in the U.S. and he doesn’t believe it’s the state’s obligation to come up with funds for a program that’s already apart of the federal government.
