(Brookings, SD) — A Brookings company hopes a flu vaccine for turkeys might eventually help protect multiple species from avian flu strains like H5N1. The bird flu has wreaked havoc on the poultry industry for the past two years. But animal science company Medgene sees a path forward that starts with turkeys. Medgene’s vaccine platform already has approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and is used to make vaccines for swine. Medgene is the only company with a platform-based vaccine in the works.
