(Pierre, SD) — The sponsor of abortion rights Amendment G is calling on South Dakota legislators to pass an abortion exemptions bill. Co-founder of Dakotans for Health, Rick Weiland, has made his case with lawmakers to invoke the “emergency clause” to pass the bill during the upcoming legislative session. In his statement last week, Weiland said, “The extreme abortion ban in South Dakota strips women of their basic freedoms and threatens our state’s medical professionals with imprisonment for providing the care they were trained to deliver.” He added South Dakota women victimized by rape or incest, or those facing a fatal fetal abnormality, should not be forced to carry those pregnancies to term. Weiland says, “We have a moral obligation to act now.”
