(Vermillion, SD) — The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam that’s circulating. The office says it’s receiving reports from people who say they’ve received calls from someone identifying themselves as Officer Brian O’Connell who claims to be from the sheriff’s office. The scammer says they’re trying to collect on pandemic loans the person receiving the call supposedly owes. Residents are reminded not to give out money over the phone if they’re not initiating the call and never pay over the phone using gift cards.
