(Lincoln County, SD) — A community organization is not happy after no questions were presented from lawmakers to the Department of Corrections secretary about the proposed prison site in Lincoln County. DOC Secretary Kellie Wasko took part in a Senate Judiciary briefing Thursday and updated seven state senators about the current state of the department while taking any of their questions. The Lincoln County prison site has been subject to controversy and backlash from the Neighbors Opposing Prison Expansion, or NOPE. The only report on the new men’s prison site at the briefing was information on funding bills. Members of NOPE were critical, calling out the legislators that are representing residents for not asking the same questions the organization is asking, specifically about the location and safety. Many legislators are on board with the proposed site, citing financial costs as a reason to push forward quickly.
