(Watertown, SD) — A cooperative that owns four ethanol plants is making another contribution to support a ballot question about carbon dioxide pipelines. Glacial Lakes Energy has donated 400-thousand dollars to the Vote Yes for a Strong South Dakota ballot question committee, which is supporting Referred Law 21. The cooperative has now given 800-thousand dollars to the campaign. Referred Law 21 would establish financial and other protections for landowners and counties that are affected by pipelines, making companies liable to cover damages and follow other guidelines. Supporters are describing the law as a “bill of rights” for landowners. Opponents of the ballot measure say it’s an attack on local control and they’re concerned about potentially hazardous pipeline leaks.
