First South Dakota Flu Death Of Season

(Pierre, SD) — Flu season is making its presence known after the first reported death in South Dakota. The death stemming from the virus was reported last week by the state health department. South Dakota’s DOH has already reported 215 confirmed flu cases and 15 hospitalizations to begin the season so far. Health experts are urging folks to take preventative measures by washing your hands, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with those who are already sick. It’s also recommended to get a flu shot as soon as possible that will last through the entire season. Avera Vice President of Clinical Quality, Dr. David Basel, says the flu traditionally peaks in December before dropping off for a few weeks until a bigger peak into late January and February.
