(Centerville, SD) — A former mayor of Centerville is currently the suspect in a triple murder investigation. According to officials, it happened late on the night of Memorial Day. Former Centerville Mayor, 64-year-old Jay Ostrem, is in custody for allegedly walking to a nearby neighboring house and killing three people inside. According to court documents, one of the victims called 9-1-1 around 9:45 saying that their family member had been shot and killed and that they also had been shot. Ostrem was spotted outside by a Game, Fish and Parks officer carrying a handgun and an AR-style rifle. Spent shell casings were found on him, and the officer reported smelling alcohol coming from the suspect. Ostrem is being held on a one-million-dollar cash-only bond in the Minnehaha County Jail on three counts of first-degree murder as South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation leads the investigation.
