(Pierre, SD) — Governor Noem says she wants the state’s 80-million-dollar surplus to go toward prison construction. She made the announcement Monday saying the move will help South Dakotans keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets. Noem added the state doesn’t just talk about fiscal responsibility but follows through. The organization NOPE Lincoln County is against the planned construction of a new penitentiary in rural Canton. It released a statement saying there are pressing issues within the Department of Corrections that need immediate attention and building a new facility without addressing these problems is not a viable solution.
