(Pierre, SD) — Governor Kristi Noem is speaking out about her relationship with tribes in South Dakota. She says she wants to be a partner with them despite not having authority to instill any “law and order” because they are sovereign nations. Tribal leaders haven’t been quiet about their frustrations with the federal government and the state. Oglala Sioux Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out recently banned the governor from their tribal land over her comments about the U.S.-Mexico border. Noem told KELOLAND News, “I think the last two administrations have failed our tribes,” and that she’s actually criticized former President Donald Trump and current President Biden for not extending federal support to tribal nations in South Dakota.
