Group Against New Men’s Prison Is Frustrated With Wasko’s Stance

(Lincoln County, SD) — The president of a group who is against the new men’s prison proposal wants the South Dakota Secretary of Corrections to consider a new location. This comes after Kellie Wasko said to lawmakers yesterday that they’re not planning to look at other land options. Neighbors Opposing Prison Expansion President Kyah Broders says she’s frustrated by the Secretary’s comments because the group believes a new prison has to be closer to existing infrastructure. The plan is for the prison to built on 477th Avenue and 278th Street in Lincoln County between Harrisburg and Canton. To fight back, landowners in the area have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Corrections to try to stop the rezoning process.
