Gunman Gets Life In Prison For High-Speed Chase In 2022

(Madison, SD) — The gunman who shot multiple times at South Dakota law enforcement during a high-speed pursuit last summer is going to prison for the rest of his life. A judge in Lake County sentenced 40-year-old James Lanpher to life behind bars Wednesday for two counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer. His passenger, 45-year-old Bonner Juel, received a 20-year sentence. Lanpher led officers on a chase through Moody and Lake counties on July 14th, 2022, at speeds close to a hundred miles an hour, while firing his weapon from the car window. At one point, Lanpher even went the wrong way down I-29.
