High School Journalism Classes No Longer Count Toward Opportunity Scholarship

(Pierre, SD) — High school journalism classes are no longer counting toward the state’s Opportunity Scholarship program. The South Dakota Board of Regents has voted to remove the courses from the qualifying classes included in the English unit requirements. Board Executive Director Nathan Lukkes says the reason for the decision is journalism classes vary widely from district to district so there is no standard curriculum to consider. Sioux Falls Lincoln journalism teacher Katie Kroeze says she and other instructors were not given any information about the choice to remove the courses before the vote happened. The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship provides up to 75-hundred dollars for college tuition to students who meet the necessary curriculum and ACT score requirements in high school.
