Homelessness On The Rise In Sioux Falls

(Sioux Falls, SD) — The homeless population is increasing in Sioux Falls. A January 2023 report from South Dakota Housing shows that “Sioux Falls had 490 people experiencing homelessness, which is an increase from 2022 with 407 unhoused people and 354 in 2021.”

Augustana Research Institute conducts multiple reports on housing needs in Sioux Falls, vice president Suzanne Smith says the 2024 report will be released in a few weeks. She says more people are becoming vulnerable to losing their homes as more housing becomes unaffordable. The city recently hired Michelle Treasure to take on the new role of Homelessness Services Coordinator and she says she’ll work with other organizations to have a positive impact on those experiencing homelessness.
