(Volga, SD) — A Brookings County kindergarten teacher is the 2025 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. The state Department of Education announced on Thursday that Sioux Valley Elementary School teacher Amy Verhelst is this year’s winner. She has been a teacher for ten years and is a graduate of South Dakota State. Verhelst will represent South Dakota next spring at the 2025 National Teacher of the Year Award ceremony in Washington, D.C.
