(Canton, SD) — Officials and landowners are discussing the proposed new men’s prison site in Lincoln County. The County Commission held a meeting yesterday where South Dakota Department of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko shared the plan and heard responses filled with concerns from both commissioners and landowners. It was the first time the DOC visited a county meeting since the location was announced in 2023. Wasko says the new 825-million-dollar facility would have a campus layout and is designed to better rehabilitate inmates while increasing security. Lincoln county residents voiced their displeasure with how the DOC decided on the site without addressing the county first and leaving their questions unanswered. DOC Senior Policy Advisor Ryan Brunner says finding a new location would cost the state an extra hundred-million dollars.
