(Mitchell, SD) — Voters in Mitchell are still keeping a close eye on one of their Primary Election ballot measures. About 45 percent of registered voters showed up Tuesday to decide the fate of a multi-million-dollar plan to dredge Lake Mitchell. Approval for the plan to provide funds for the Lake Mitchell project was split by just 30 votes. The South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office notes such small differences in these races will likely call for recounts. Officials blame phosphorus from Firesteel Creek as the main cause for harmful algae buildup in Lake Mitchell that needs to be taken care of. If the measure passes, the lake would start getting drained this fall for the project to be complete in 2027.
