New Magistrate for Sioux Falls Added For First Time In 20 Years With Rising Caseloads

(Sioux Falls, SD) — South Dakota’s Supreme Court is adding a new magistrate to the circuit. Attorney Jonathan Leddige will be a new judge after the decision was made Friday in an effort to cease rising caseloads. It’s the first new magistrate position filled in the Sioux Falls area for the first time in 20 years. Leddige has been a public defender at the Minnehaha County Public Defender’s Office for nine years. He also spent a year teaching criminal defense at the University of South Dakota. Second Circuit Presiding Judge Robin Houwman expects the Second Circuit, which serves Minnehaha and Lincoln counties, to surpass 60-thousand cases this year.
