New Naval Ship Honoring Pierre Debuts

(Mobile, AL) — South Dakota is getting more representation in the U.S. Navy with the debut of a new combat ship. The USS Pierre Littoral Combat Ship was christened over the weekend down in Mobile, Alabama. It’s now the second ship in the Navy named after South Dakota’s capital city. The LCS is described as a fast, agile, ship that’s designed to operate in near-shore environments and protect against coastal threats. Senator John Thune spoke at Saturday’s ceremony as an Honorable, along with Mayor of Pierre, Steve Harding. The USS Pierre will go through tests for a while before eventually being commissioned into the Navy out of San Diego sometime next year.
