(Pierre, SD) — Advocates are taking steps to put the issue of open primaries on the ballot in South Dakota. Sponsors of the proposed 2024 ballot initiative submitted their petition yesterday to the South Dakota Secretary of State. The proposed initiative would amend the state constitution to allow for open primaries for governor, Congress, the State Legislature, and county elective offices. Open primaries allow all candidates to compete in a single primary to be voted on by all voters. The petition must be approved before the campaign can begin collecting the 35-thousand signatures needed to qualify for next year’s ballot.
