Open Primary Question May Make 2024 Ballot

(Pierre, SD) — The citizen-led ballot measure for an Open Primary may make the 2024 ballot in South Dakota. Amendment Five is a state constitutional amendment aimed to circumvent party primaries with nonpartisan races. It would be an open ballot with no party designations and send the top two vote-getters to the general election. Amendment V was rejected but received over a 44-percent vote in the last election, and officials are pushing to try for it again. Currently, Independent voters in South Dakota can vote in Democratic primaries but not Republican ones. All registered voters would be eligible to weigh in on which candidates advance to the general election.
