(Sioux Falls, SD) — It’s unclear what happened at the South Dakota State Penitentiary Wednesday when reports of “suspicious activity” alerted authorities. KELOLAND News said it received multiple calls and messages in the afternoon and reporters reached out to the Department of Corrections and the office of Governor Noem to learn more. However, the newsroom didn’t hear back until 8:30, when Secretary of Corrections Kelli Wasko released a statement about the situation. Wasko said “order has been restored” at the penitentiary after a “disturbance, which included a staff assault.” It’s currently unknown if the penitentiary will release full details about what exactly happened.
