(Sioux Falls, SD) — South Dakota organ donors are sharing their stories and encouraging more people to register as donors. Yesterday was National Living Donor Day, and the healthcare company Avera hosted an event to raise awareness about organ donation. Katie Benedict donated her kidney to a boy in Georgia and said “to me, it didn’t really feel like it was an extraordinary thing. It just felt like something I had to do. I’ve been really blessed in my life and I really wanted to share that and give that to someone else.” The Avera Transplant Institute has completed over a thousand organ transplants since 1993. To make things more special, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken proclaimed April 3rd, 2024 as Living Donor Day and each donor at the event received a copy of the city’s proclamation.
