Over 50,000 SD Kids Miss Out On Summer Food Program

(Pierre, SD) — More than 54-thousand South Dakota kids are missing out on a USDA summer food program. The state is one of few that did not accept the grant money by last Friday’s deadline. The EBT program is aimed at helping families and ensuring children have enough food when out of school. Tens of thousands of South Dakota students would have benefited this summer from 120-dollars in grocery benefits through the SNAP program. The Governor’s office responded, saying, “Because of South Dakota’s record low unemployment rate and the administrative burden associated with running this program, we declined these particular federal dollars.”
