Poll Shows Grocery Tax Opposition Still High

(Pierre, SD) — A new poll is revealing a strong majority of South Dakotans still support dropping the sales tax on food. South Dakota News Watch co-sponsored the statewide poll that shows just over 60 percent of registered voters support the proposed ballot measure that would eliminate the four-point-two percent state sales tax on groceries. The strong support was seen across all party affiliations. Just under 29 percent of overall voters opposed the cut and close to ten percent were undecided. Previous estimates on the impact of the cut put the cost of the tax on consumers, and the accompanying loss in state revenues, at about one-hundred-million dollars a year.
