(Pierre, SD) — An investment of six-million dollars to improve literacy rates in South Dakota is getting closer to happening. House Bill 10-22 would provide the state’s Department of Education with the funding for a four-year statewide teacher training effort in the science of reading at the elementary level. State educators and lawmakers are currently studying successful results from Mississippi after the state invested heavily to raise literacy rates. However, officials there are saying the process is likely to need more time and much more expensive than South Dakota is anticipating.
