(Lincoln County, SD) — The South Dakota Department of Corrections now officially owns the land where it plans to build a new men’s prison in Lincoln County. It comes after the completed transfer of the deed at the end of February for two pieces of land between Canton and Harrisburg. The Office of School and Public Lands previously possessed those two parcels of land but was signed over by its commissioner at the beginning of the year. Governor Noem has been leading the way on the transfer of land and backing the decision to go forth with the destination for the facility despite some backlash from local landowners near the site.
