(Canton, SD) — South Dakota Department of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko will no longer be at a public forum Thursday night for the proposed prison in Lincoln County. It was supposed to be an opportunity for residents to learn more about the state’s decision on the location between Canton and Harrisburg. A group against the plan called NOPE, which stands for “neighbors opposing prison expansion,” invited Wasko and the Governor’s office to attend. But now that a lawsuit has been filed by the group in opposition, the DOC’s general counsel says an informational meeting is no longer possible. The lawsuit is asking a judge to decide if the state should have to receive a conditional use permit from Lincoln County.
