(Pierre, SD) — The South Dakota Department of Corrections is looking to secure more funds to break ground on the state’s new men’s prison project. It comes as the cost of construction is now going to be tens of millions of dollars more than what was projected earlier this year. DOC officials met with lawmakers in Pierre yesterday for discussions on where the money will come from. The DOC’s director of finance and administration, Brittni Skipper says just under 200-million still needs to be budgeted for a guaranteed maximum price of about 825-million dollars. On top of that, lawmakers still have to pass legislation to approve the new prison’s construction. The facility, which will be able to house up to around 15-hundred inmates, is planned to go between Canton and Harrisburg in rural Lincoln County.
