(Pierre, SD) — One South Dakota lawmaker is leading an effort to cut down on property taxes in the upcoming legislative session. Representative Tony Venhuizen is sponsoring a bill that could bring cuts up to 35 percent per homeowner if passed. The goal is to make home ownership more of a reality for state residents with low income. It would follow the result of a proposed increase in the state sales tax from four-point-two percent to five. Venhuizen says the increase is comparable to “three cents on a four-dollar loaf of bread.” He estimates that his property tax bill would save South Dakota homeowners around a combined 280-million dollars.
