(Pierre, SD) — The effort to pass some kind of Educational Savings Accounts plan in South Dakota is not dead yet. After legislation did not make it out of the House Education Committee Wednesday, Republican lawmakers said yesterday they plan on reviving the debate over school vouchers. House Majority Leader Scott Odenbach called Wednesday’s vote a “small setback” and insisted one of the previous bills could come back up or new legislation will be introduced. New Governor Larry Rhoden also said during his first address this week that he is for an ESA plan. Senate Majority Leader Jim Mehlhaff stated yesterday it’s actually a top priority for the governor. However, the majority of state public education groups strongly oppose the idea of school vouchers, continuing to site concerns about diverting public funds to private institutions while the state’s education budget is already tight. No attempt to bring back the debate has been made yet.
