(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota cities and towns are asking residents and business owners to check pipes coming inside for lead. Officials say taking a few minutes to do so can help identify a health risk. The Environmental Protection Agency made the request in effort to reduce any possible lead contamination. Brandon Public Works Director Rollie Hoeke says people can do an easy test by taking a coin and scratching the pipe. If it’s lead, the pipe doesn’t turn shiny like it would with copper. Children exposed to lead could suffer from behavior and learning problems, slowed growth, and other issues. Adults may experience cardiovascular problems, decreased kidney function and reproductive problems.
