(Sioux Falls, SD) — Attorneys General across 14 states are suing TikTok for unlawful practices that allegedly harm children and their mental health. While South Dakota is not one of them for now, a state mental health expert is weighing in on the allegations that the app aims to make children addicted to the platform. Avera Clinical Psychologist Wallace Jackmon says there’s no doubt about the addictive nature of social media which research has supported over the past decade. The lawsuits are describing the app as “dopamine inducing.” Jackmon notes screen time can be even more destructive for kids and adults who are predisposed to anxiety and depression. He also urges parents to look at themselves before they can effectively limit their kids.
