(Pierre, SD) — The South Dakota National Guard’s next trip to the U.S.-Mexico border is closer to having the backing of state funds. This time, lawmakers are working to have one-point-five million dollars available for what will be the fifth Texas deployment issued by Governor Noem. About 60 troops are expected to head to the Southern border this spring after Noem vowed to continue supporting fellow Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his state’s battle against the migrant crisis. However, Texas has not been reimbursing National Guard deployments from other states so far. The House overwhelmingly passed a bill that will allow the money to be pulled up front from South Dakota’s emergency and disaster fund. It now heads to the Senate for consideration.
