Several Inmates Will Face Charges Stemming From Last Month’s Prison Disturbances

(Sioux Falls, SD) — Several inmates will face charges today in connection to last month’s disturbances at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Officials say the disturbances took place on March 27th and 28th after tablets were removed from the prison. Two correctional officers were assaulted by inmates and extra staff had to be called in to get the situation under control. Attorney General Marty Jackley told KELOLAND News that he believes more than 10 inmates will face charges. Jackley also says he anticipates ” announcing serious and significant charges for the harm that was done to the guard as well as the property damage that has affected matters in the penitentiary.” Governor Kristi Noem has commented on the removal of the tablets and said there’s an ongoing investigation because the inmates were using the devices for the wrong reasons.
