Sioux Falls School District Wants To use Grant To Address Absenteeism

(Sioux Falls, SD) — The Sioux Falls School District is working to fix absenteeism problems by applying to grants from the state’s Department of Education. It would help hire staff who work on getting more students back in their seats, and also help students recover from learning loss while they were absent. The state of South Dakota as a whole has a similar rate of attendance and dealing with chronic absenteeism with many districts having similar attendance issues. Challenges to connecting with students who are chronically absent include lack of access to transportation and community resources and not enough personal contact with students or families. Sioux Falls School District assistant superintendent James Nold says the district is going to keep working at addressing the issue and hopes grants will go a long way in doing so.
