Smithfield Foods Completes New $45M Wastewater Treatment System

(Sioux Falls, SD) — A long-time Sioux Falls company is finished with a new 45-million-dollar wastewater treatment system after years of violations. Smithfield Foods has invested millions of dollars to improve the water it discharges into the Big Sioux River. The new system replaced most of the existing system at the pork-processing plant near Falls Park and Downtown Sioux Falls. It’s supposed to reduce the overall nitrogen load into the Big Sioux River by at least two-thirds, according to the company.
