(Pierre, SD) — State Democrats are urging Governor Kristi Noem to deploy the National Guard to help with flood cleanup efforts. Senator Liz Larson said in a news release that it’s a time of crisis and resources must be focused on helping constituents recover from the severe impact of the floods. She went on to say the National Guard’s presence and assistance are crucial in providing relief and aiding in the rebuilding process. Earlier this week, Noem explained her reluctance to activate the Guard saying local counties have to pay for that type of response and it’s “extremely expensive.” Representative Kameron Nelson says, “This is not a time for political grandstanding — it’s a time for action and leadership.”
