(Tea, SD) — A Tea woman is sharing her experience with a weight loss drug that potentially led to her unexpected pregnancy. Chelsey Levene says she was taking the weight management medication, Topiramate, for about six months before she found out she was pregnant with her daughter. Her suspicions rose about the cause because she had an IUD. But doctors said in Levene’s case that her IUD had moved out of place, so it’s unclear whether that or the medication was the reason for her pregnancy. But there have been other reports circling from some doctors seeing more women on oral contraceptives become pregnant while taking weight loss medications, like Ozempic and Wegovy. Health experts are recommending that women use an extra form of birth control when starting a new medication until they know how it affects them.
