(Washington, DC) — South Dakota’s John Thune is going to have one of the most powerful voices on Capitol Hill. Republicans have elected him as the next Senate Majority Leader. Thune and Texas’ John Cornyn faced off in a secret vote after Florida’s Rick Scott was eliminated in the first-round ballot for Senate Majority Leader. Thune will replace Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell, who is stepping aside as Republican leader. Thune has held the number two position as Republican Whip since 2019. Republicans are prepared to take Majority control of the Senate with the 53 votes they received in the General Election.
